How do people learn skills effectively?

People often will say they are visual learners or learn best by doing. The implication is others do not need to see examples or other materials, and that not everyone learns by doing.

The truth is we all learn better when we are exposed to more—more examples, more visuals, more explanations and, certainly, more hands-on activities.

Repetition and involvement of all the senses drive new information and skills into the memory. Even people who say they learn by doing will not learn effectively if all they do is dive directly into hands-on activities without context or understanding.

Are you training someone to execute a new skill? Be sure you offer hands-on training while explaining and demonstrating in equal measure.
